Brewing coffee and keeping it warm without electricity

In this two minute video shot in my RV along the shoreline in Port Townsend, Wash., I show how I make coffee without using electricity. Of course, that's not a huge thing because that's what everybody did back in the ol' "perk" days. But my system not only brews the coffee but keeps it warm for hours -- so no need to reheat!

  1. Great idea... I use an insulated french press. Same simple operation. Place cffee grounds in press, add hot water wait a few minutes press the plunger - viola coffee that is done and keeps warm... No electricity...

  2. I have a carafe just like that. Gotta look for one of those cones to put on top. Great idea.

btw, I also have an old “percolator” from last century.

  3. We have been using the DW's grandmothers percolator for the last two plus years. Last patent date on it is 1915. Makes excellent coffee and at a very low flame and off to the side of the burner, keeps it hot for a loooong time. Shades of the old west!

  4. why not just make perked coffee. We make it in the camper, over a camp fire, and at home.

  5. I use the single coffee bags. Folger's makes some and I've also used the generic store brand. They are like tea bags, so I boil the water on my camping stove, put it in the cup and use the tea bag.

I reboil for each cup of coffee, so they are always hot and fresh.

This is great for hotel travel as well. If I'm in a hotel room without a coffee maker, I use an inversion heater to boil the water in my cup.

What I'd really like is an old fashioned percolator like my grandma used when I was a little girl. The pot could double for boiling water for washing dishes. I wonder if there are any available on Amazon...

  6. I use a French Press when I have no electricity. I'm at my son's home right now and I had my morning cup hours ago, but when you took that sip... I just had to go get another cup.

  8. Doesn't the cook top you used use 12VDC (Electric) to control the LP gas coming in?

  9. We also use the old percolator with the glass bubble on top. Heat with the gas stove. We reheat it when necessary but mostly only enough for one giant cup each and that is perfect for the day...too much and we vibrate!!

  10. Coleman makes a drip coffee maker that goes on the stove top. Works just like an electric one but uses the stove for heating the water.

  11. We are full-timers and have always used a Melitta system very similar to what you show here. We have a large one that makes 8 or 10 cups (#6 cone filters). Then after brewing we put it into an insulated carafe that we purchased separately. We also have a small one for making 1 mug at a time that requires #2 cone filters. All you do is boil water and pour it through the coffee grounds in the filter. You can find them in stores and online.
