Raiding Mr. Hippo for quarters

This video is standard definition so it requires only minimal bandwidth for RVers on the road with limited data plans.

I'm only days away from heading out on a three to five month journey from Seattle to the East coast and then back. Today I spent some time going through my cookie jar piggy bank, which I call Mr. Hippo.  I was looking for quarters — lots of them! Why? I explain in the video.

  2. Ha - Oh Chuck, if I had to put my "quarter" on your post it would have been "quarters to do my laundry. " Have yet to find a laundromat with washers/dryers that took anything but quarters. Better save a few to do your laundry.

  3. Jerry's right - you'll need quarters for your laundry - both washers and dryers take them exclusively - lots of them!! I went on a 6-month solo RV exploration from Seattle to Florida, up the east coast to New England (where I spent time in libraries, archives, and cemeteries doing family history) and finally back across the mid-west to Seattle. I needed quarters in every city either for parking or for laundry.
Visit the public library bulletin boards in each city for even more info on local events - a chat with the librarian will often provide very interesting info, especially if they know you are a writer..... Tourist Info office or the local Chamber of Commerce will often give you the names of local characters you should meet and talk to.
Have a wonderful trip - we'll be waiting for your updates!!! Kat

  6. SO looking forward to tales of your trip. You have been an inspiration and a fantastic source of information for the upcoming phase of our lives. Have the truck, have the 5er, DH posed to retire. Right now we are downsizing and getting house ready to sell and hope we can be on the road within the next 6 months. Thanks for all you do...

  8. I thought the quarters were for laundry also. I've always enjoyed doing laundry at laundromats because it makes me slow down for a couple of hours. You might not need that when you're traveling, but you'll need clean clothes. I live in a place small enough to have a truly local newspaper, so I understand why you'd want those.

I look forward to your reports, especially on US 2. Thanks for the low-res video; I need that.

  9. Hi Chuck,
Really look forward to reading about all your on the road exploits. I've been frozen on our RV pad while building a S/B for DW. However, looks like August I'll be heading up to the mountains of WV for some cool air and a chance for that side of my brain to open up and breathe fresh air once again. Have fun, I'm sure you will, be safe.

  10. Chuck - I wrapped dozens of rolls of quarters then took them to the bank. The teller then unwrapped each carefully counted wrapped roll of quarters and poured them into a change counter. Why did I bother counting and wrapping?

  11. The piggy-bank is a waste of space and weight. Think of how many times you drive through a little town and pass the town bank. Just stop, go inside and meet some locals, and swipe your plastic card for a few rolls of quarters. No transaction fees, and you don't have to stockpile pounds of quarters in your RV.

  12. Rather than rolls of quarters, on the road we have several "quarter banks:" Old 35mm film canisters which are great for holding quarters. Any quarters we get in change go right into a quarter bank.

  14. Chuck,
I always enjoy your posts and look forward to you getting your "right brain" in gear. So much of our country is remarkable if one has the ability to find it. We too are backroaders who look for a quality of life opposite to that of the mainstram media. Wouldn't it be great if beginning reporters had to start on a small paper instead of a media conglomerate?

These thoughts are from a former weekly newspaper reporter/editor/photographer (all in one).

  15. I love newspapers and we purchase them wherever we stop. We enjoyed many community dinners and help whatever fund raiser event that it supported. Also a great way to interact with local people and learn what they feel are "not to be missed" activities. A couple years ago, in Bend, OR, the newspaper boxes had credit card slots. Convenient. We also subscribe to our local newspaper too as well as read the "state" newspaper. Thanks for the video. Quarters are good for the laundry mat. I, too, enjoy doing laundry at a laundry mat. It's a great place to watch people and the bulletin boards are usually quite interesting. Many "parking meters" now take credit cards. And many do-it-yourself car washes require quarters!

  16. M&Ms minis tubes make great quarter storage, The short ones hold a little more than $10, the "king size" more than $13.
